Ripplewood Resort

Welcome to the Ripplewood Resort reservations page! We hope that we can accommodate you in the cabin of your choice, on the dates you would like to stay with us.

In order to get the cabin you would like, we generally recommend that you contact us at least three months in advance. For busy times like weekends during the summer (June through September), or holiday times, we suggest booking 1 year in advance.

We have a tool to check availability via a web portal so you can choose which cabin you would like prior to calling. Utilizing this tool should greatly streamline the reservation process, and will allow us to serve you expeditiously! Please call us at (831) 667-2242, or in the Continental USA call (800) 575-1735

Ripplewood has seventeen cabins, eight of which overlook the Big Sur River. All of the cabins are equipped with bedding, towels, coffee makers with coffee, and small to full size refrigerators. Kitchen units have basic utensils, pots and pans. All of our fireplace units are provided with one complimentary bundle of wood per day. We have more wood for sale in our grocery store, or you may choose to bring a box of wood with you from your local store. We ask that if you do bring firewood, that it is cut to a maximum of 16" lengths as is standard or it will not fit our fireplaces/ firepits. Larger lengths of wood are prohibited.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our policies.

Some of the most frequently asked questions are:

  • Q: Where are the redwood trees?

  • A: All around Ripplewood and Big Sur! Most of our cabins are surrounded by Coastal Redwoods (s. sempervirens). There are some good hiking trails in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, to walk through redwood groves. If you are looking for Giant Sequoia Redwoods (s. giganteum), you won't find them in Big Sur. Giant Seqoia Redwoods are located in the Western Sierra Nevada Mountains of California

  • Q: Where is the city of Big Sur?

  • A: There is no actual city of Big Sur. Big Sur is an area along Highway 1 that stretches 90 miles South of Carmel to Cambria. The "dot on the map" typically points to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park located approximately one mile South of Ripplewood

  • Q: Do the beds in the cabins have blankets and sheets?

  • A: Yes, all of the cabins have bedding, towels, bathroom amenities including shampoo, coffee makers, and small to full size refrigerators. Just like a regular hotel, we provide housekeeping daily

  • Q: Where is the best place to eat?

  • A: There are a number of restaurants in the Big Sur area. Ripplewood's restaurant serves an excellent breakfast and lunch, and The Roadhouse across Highway 1 is open for dinner. If you don't mind taking a little drive, Deetjen's has great food, and Nepenthe has the best view of the coast. If you are on a budget or just want basic fare, The Taphouse is a solid option with reasonable prices for the area and good food. If you are celebrating a special occasion, or want to splurge on the pinnacles of Big Sur's fine dining experiences, The Restaurant at Ventana, or Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn are just a short drive away. For a comprehensive list of places to eat in Big Sur, see our links page

  • Q: What is the weather like?

  • A: On average, the warmest months are June through September. The coolest months are November through March. The highest recorded temperature was 104°F in 1987. The lowest was 20°F in 1990.

  • Q: Where is the beach?

  • A: There is beach access at Andrew Molera State Park, 2.3 miles north of Ripplewood, or Pfeiffer Beach, a 2.4 mile drive south, and then 2 miles down a narrow road (No RV's please), which leads to the parking area. The fee is $10 to access the beach area

  • Q: Where are some good hiking trails nearby?

  • A: Andrew Molera State park is 2.3 miles north of us and features short or long trails to the beach. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is 1.3 miles south where you can hike amongst the redwoods to Pfeiffer falls.

  • Q: Where can I get cell phone reception?

  • A: The best cellphone coverage is near Pt. Sur Rock ~3 miles to the North of Ripplewood, or near Ventana and Post Ranch a bit further to the South. AT&T and Verizon clients seem to have better luck in the Big Sur area. T-Mobile/Sprint/etc. don’t seem to get coverage at all. We provide free Wi-Fi in the café and general store area.

  • Q:Are we able to barbeque on our cabin's fire pit?

  • A: Yes. Grill racks and firewood are available for purchase in our general store. All fires must be continuously monitored, and extinguished completely before walking away.

  • Q: Where are the otters?

  • A:There are two sea otter refuges in Big Sur: near the Point Sur Lighthouse and in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. A good place to observe sea otters and other marine mammals is in Pt. Lobos State Park, near Carmel. You can also watch sea otters playing in the surf on Ocean View Boulevard in Pacific Grove (next to Monterey) or get even closer at the sea otter exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
